Riverside Artswalk Gallery Spotlight: Division 9 Gallery
Riverside Artswalk Gallery Spotlight:
Division 9 Gallery

Cosme Cordova, the owner and curator of Division 9 Gallery in Riverside, CA, expresses that running a gallery is a vital means for artists to be part of the community and showcase their work, from established artists to emerging talents. He is also the founder of Riverside Artswalk and has been actively involved in the local arts community since 1997. He values the opportunities that the gallery provides to connect people, including artists and the city, and sees it as beneficial to both. He would like to see more galleries opening in the area as he believes it would bring more opportunities and growth for the local arts community. Cordova's ultimate aspiration with his creative endeavors is to continue to be actively involved in the arts community here in Riverside. He mentions that he didn't have any formal training in business or event organization but has had to learn through experience and he's now better at it and hopes that it will reflect on his future events and projects. As for his artistic style, Cordova mentions that it has evolved throughout the years, experimenting with different mediums from oil painting to acrylic painting, ceramics, pen and ink, and monotype dry point. He expresses that he uses his art as a means of communication, to raise awareness about specific subjects. Such as his recent show at his gallery, El Coyote Dichotomy. Which was based on his own experience of his father being sent back to Mexico and having to pay a Coyote $500 to cross back into the United States. It was a way to remind viewers that we all come from different places and that the United States is relatively young and the majority of the people here have come through different means, like a desert, jumping a fence or by boat.
